Hello Steppers!
Just wanted to share with you a project that I did with my son a couple of weeks ago!
We made tie-dye shirts – they turned out really nice for our first crack at it, so here we go!
You need:
Tie Dye Kit from Walmart – 20 sum bucks – comes with everything you need – elastic bands, bottles, dye, rubber gloves
Water – instructions on Walmart kit + Spray bottle
Saran Wrap
Plain white COTTON T-shirts- got mine at Walmart – pack of 3 for $8.
Make sure you have a nice big flat area to work in – that you don’t mind if it gets messy – we did it in the backyard!
Put your gloves on and cut a garbage bag in half and place it on the table – to help with the mess
Then place your white cotton tshirts flat on the table -
Spray it down with a spray bottle full of water – make sure it is nice and damp.
Then tie the shirt with elastic bands to form whatever design you like to make – the Walmart kit is great because it shows you cool patterns and how to tie the t-shirt in order to make them, I went with the classic spiral design.
For this design you need to pinch the middle of the T-shirt and spin it counterclockwise into a ball – then tie it with the bands
This is the fun part – squeeze the die starting in the middle with 1 colour and then alternate colours in circular shapes until the whole t-shirt is coloured.
Then wrap them in Saran wrap and hold them there for 8 hrs -
After 8 hrs unwrap them and cut the elastics with a scissor – be careful not to cut the tshirt! I learned this the hard way!
Hose them down until the water runs clear.
Then hang them to dry! Don`t they look great I did all of these with my Walmart kit and still have another batch of dye for another run! So you get a lot out of it!
Then I rolled them into little rolls and put a nice bow on them that i made with ribbon and tulle, for my nieces! They loved them!
When wearing them for the first few times – be careful and treat them like new dark denim jeans - don’t wear with white and try not to get it wet – i.e wear them to the beach.
When washing for the first few tims also wash alone so they dont ruin the rest of your laundry.
There you have it!
Great Success!
